Merxheim is a French commune with 1261 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department of the Grand Est region ( Alsace until 2015 ). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Thann-Guebwiller and the Canton of Guebwiller .

The municipality of Merxheim is located on the Lauch , about halfway between Mulhouse and Colmar .

Neighboring communities are (clockwise from the north) Gundolsheim , Meyenheim , Réguisheim , Raedersheim , Issenheim and Bergholtz .

history

From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Merxheim belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Gebweiler district in the Upper Alsace district .

Attractions

The Church of St. Peter and Paul was rebuilt in 1772. The Romanesque bell tower, however, dates back to the 11th century. The church is listed as a monument historique .

Infrastructure

Merxheim has its own stop on the Strasbourg – Basel railway line and direct road connections to Raedersheim , Issenheim , Gundolsheim and Meyenheim .

Community partnerships

The German municipality of the same name in Merxheim in Rhineland-Palatinate has been Merxheim's partner municipality since 1973 .
