The community on the edge of the South Vosges lies above the Quierenbach , which enters the Upper Rhine Plain here. The settlement of the village merges seamlessly into the built-up area of the Orschwihr municipality in the north . The west of the municipal area, which extends into the Vosges, is wooded ( Forêt communale de Bergholtz-Zell ), where the highest point is reached near the Col du Dreibannstein at 573 m above sea level. The distance to the cities of Colmar in the north and Mulhouse in the south is around 25 kilometers each. The municipality of Bergholtzzell is part of the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park .

history

In the annals of Murbach Abbey there are references to an early hermitage of Scottish or Irish monks, but this has not yet been proven archaeologically.

Today's community was established in 1827 when the area was separated from the Bergholtz community . From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Bergholtzzell belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Gebweiler district in the Upper Alsace district .

Attractions

The Church of St. Benedict ( Église Saint-Benoît ) originally dates from the Ottonian period . It was expanded in the 14th century and demolished in 1873 due to dilapidation. The newly built church on the same site has only a few relics of the previous church: two octagonal columns and two pilasters . The church is designated as a monument historique .

Other attractions include 18th century houses, wayside crosses, and a fountain.
