Niederhergheim is a French commune with 1,129 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin département in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ).

geography

Niederhergheim is located on the left bank of the Ill , about twelve kilometers southeast of Colmar , between Oberhergheim in the south and Sainte-Croix-en-Plaine in the north-west. In the west the municipality extends to the Alten Thur , in the east to the Canal Vauban .

history

The parish and the village of Niederhergheim were first mentioned in a document in the 13th century . The castle of the Herkheim family was besieged in 1304 and destroyed at the beginning of the 16th century. In 1526 the castle was rebuilt. From 1589 until the French Revolution , the village was a fief of the Schauenbourg family. In 1806 the castle was finally destroyed. In 1850 the community was expanded to the east.

From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Niederhergheim belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Gebweiler district in the Upper Alsace district .

Attractions

An original church in Niederhergheim was mentioned for the first time in 1262, it was repaired in 1750, but then demolished to make way for today's church. The catholic church Sainte-Lucie was built in 1870 according to plans by the architect Laubser. The interior was designed in 1896 by Philippe Carl Schilling in the neo-Romanesque style. In 2000 the church was entered in the supplementary directory of the Monuments historiques ( inscrit MH ).

The organ dates from 1890. It was built by Martin Rinckenbach .

A farm on Rue de Vignes was built in 1768. The lintel of a Renaissance door in the building bears the year 1505 as an inscription. The farm is privately owned and was entered in the supplementary directory of the Monuments historiques in 1999.

economy

Important branches of the Niederhergheimois are arable farming , viticulture , beekeeping and the breeding of domestic cattle and domestic pigs .
