The canton of Ensisheim is a subdivision of the arrondissements of Colmar-Ribeauvillé and Thann-Guebwiller in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region in France .
history
The canton was founded on March 4, 1790 as part of the establishment of the départements as part of what was then the district of Colmar.
With the founding of the arrondissements on February 17, 1800, the canton was redesigned as part of what was then the arrondissement of Colmar.
From 1871 to 1919 the area was part of what was then the Gebweiler district , to which there was no further subdivision.
On June 28, 1919, the canton became part of the Arrondissement of Guebwiller.
The canton was enlarged on March 22, 2015.

geography
Until 2014, the canton bordered in the north with the cantons of Colmar-Sud and Neuf-Brisach in the Arrondissement of Colmar , in the east with Germany with the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald in the administrative region of Freiburg ( Baden-Württemberg ), in the south with the cantons Illzach and Wittenheim , both in the arrondissement of Mulhouse , in the southwest to the canton of Cernay in the arrondissement of Thann and to the west to the cantons of Soultz-Haut-Rhin and Rouffach .
Since the reorganization of the cantons in March 2015, the canton in the north-west and north borders the Canton of Colmar-2 and the department of Bas-Rhin in the east of Germany, in the south on the canton, Rixheim , in the southwest on the canton Wittenheim and on the west by the cantons of Guebwiller and Wintzenheim .
None of the previous municipalities in the canton switched to other cantons. There were also 22 communities from other cantons. These 22 communes belonged to the cantons of Neuf-Brisach (all 16 communes) and Andolsheim (6 of the 18 communes) until 2015 .

Until the nationwide reorganization of the French cantons in March 2015, the canton Ensisheim included the 16 municipalities of Biltzheim , Blodelsheim , Ensisheim , Fessenheim , Hirtzfelden , Meyenheim , Munchhouse , Niederentzen , Niederhergheim , Oberentzen , Oberhergheim , Pulversheim , Réguisheim , Roggenhouse , Rumersheim-le-Haut and Rustenhart . Its layout corresponded to an area of 266.24 km 2 .
politics
In the first ballot on March 22, 2015, none of the four voting pairs achieved an absolute majority. In the runoff election on March 29, 2015, Michel Habig / Betty Muller (both UD) won against Cassandra Rotily / José Sanjuan (both FN ) with 57.36% of the votes (turnout: 53.33%).
