Kunheim ( els. Küene IPA : [kyə̯nə] dt. Kuenheim ) is a French commune in the Rhone-Rhine Canal with 1,763 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Haut-Rhin in the region Grand Est (2015 Alsace ) .
history
The first known mentions come from a deed of donation from the year 998 and from the chronicle of Ebersmünster from the 13th century. In 1766 the place was relocated by one kilometer due to the repeated flooding of the meandering Rhine . 32 families were affected, making an estimated 200 people in total. The surrounding villages provided men and carts to help with the resettlement.
From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Kunheim belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Colmar district in the Upper Alsace district .
At the beginning of the Second World War , most of the village population was evacuated to Casteljaloux in the Lot-et-Garonne department . Sixty years later, in June 1999, this event was the reason for the establishment of an official community partnership between the two communities. At the beginning of the German campaign in France on June 16, 1940, the place was under heavy German artillery fire, also after the liberation of the place from Nazi rule on February 2, 1945 by American troops.
Today Kunheim is a member of the Pays Rhin-Brisach community association .
