Weckolsheim is a French commune with 665 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ) and is located southwest of Neuf-Brisach in the canton of Ensisheim . It belongs to the Pays Rhin-Brisach community association.
geography
Weckolsheim lies in the fertile Upper Rhine Plain between the Rhine in the east and the Vosges in the west. In the east the Canal Vauban runs past Weckolsheim.
Neighboring communities are Wolfgantzen in the north, Volgelsheim in the northeast , Algolsheim in the east, Obersaasheim in the southeast , Dessenheim in the southwest and Hettenschlag in the west . The sub-prefecture of Colmar is located about 17 kilometers northwest.
history
Weckolsheim was probably already settled at the time of the Merovingians. In the course of history, the place belonged to the Murbach Monastery , the House of Habsburg and then the Lords of Rappoltstein , where it stayed until the French Revolution .
From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Weckolsheim belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Colmar district in the Upper Alsace district .
