The Bois de Maettlé military cemetery in Sondernach

Sondernach (Alsatian Sunderna ) is a French commune with 615 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). She is a member of the Vallée de Munster municipal association . The municipality is part of the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park .

geography

Sondernach is located on a foothill of the Vosges main ridge , about 25 kilometers southwest of Colmar at about 550 m above sea level. The origin of the place name is explained in two ways. But it could be derived from “close to the sun”, or from “zum sundern oh”, since it is the southernmost place in the Fechttal .

history

From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Sondernach belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Colmar district in the Upper Alsace district .

Attractions

Église de l'Emm

The French military cemetery "Bois de Maettlé" and the " Église de l'Emm ", the parish church of Metzeral and Sondernach, consecrated in 1931 and also dedicated to the memory of those who fell at Metzeral in World War I , are located near Sondernach . The cemetery, laid out in 1920, was redesigned in 1924 and 1929. 373 dead from the First World War are buried here, mainly in the Fechttal valley.
