history

Skeletal finds from 1899, dating from 2000 to 1700 BC. BC, prove that the area around Katzenthal was inhabited as early as the Neolithic . Today's place arose around Wineck Castle, which was built in the late 12th century . The first time the place was called Chacindale in a document from Pope Lucius III. mentioned.

In the Middle Ages the place to belong rule Landsberg in the 16th century Lazarus of Schwendi was that in 1568 by Emperor Maximilian II. Was elevated to the "Baron von Landsberg" (from 1572 "baron of Hohenlandenberg"). In the Peace of Rijswijk (1697) the area became French again. From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Katzenthal belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Rappoltsweiler district in the Upper Alsace district .

During the First and Second World War , the site was the scene of hostilities, which caused great damage, especially towards the end of the Second World War, during the battle in the Colmar pocket.

Since 1986, Katzenthal and several Alsatian communities have belonged to the Lazarus-Schwendi-Städtebund and thus recall a particularly happy period in its history.

  • The castle Wineck was built around 1200, but was in 1502 already destroyed. Since 1972, an association takes care of the preservation and partial restoration of the castle, whose dungeon is visible from afar.
  • The Saint-Nicolas church was built in 1719 after Katzenthal became its own parish in 1690. The church tower was not built until 1895. The severe damage to the building from fighting in World War II could not be finally repaired until 1955.
