Mairie Wihr-au-Val

Wihr-au-Val (Alsatian Wihr im Dal , German Weier im Thal ) is a French commune with 1263 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Colmar-Ribeauvillé , the canton of Wintzenheim and the Vallée de Munster community association .

The municipality of Wihr-au-Val is located about twelve kilometers west-southwest of Colmar an der Fecht . The Fechttal in the Vosges is also known as the Münstertal (after the town of Munster above Wihr-au-Val). The municipality is part of the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park .

Over two thirds of the municipality is covered by forest. They extend on both sides of the fencing on the slopes and at altitudes of up to 960 m.

Neighboring communities of Wihr-au-Val are Labaroche in the north, Walbach in the northeast, Wintzenheim in the east, Vœgtlinshoffen in the southeast, Soultzbach-les-Bains in the south, Griesbach-au-Val in the southwest, Gunsbach in the west and Orbey in the northwest (point of contact) .

Wihr-au-Val and Soultzbach-les-Bains have a stop on the Colmar – Metzeral railway line .

history

Around 896 the place was called Bonifacii Villare , named after a villa of the Alsatian Duke Bonifatius .

From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Wihr-au-Val belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the district of Colmar in the district of Upper Alsace .

On June 18, 1940 Wihr-au-Val was almost completely destroyed by the German Wehrmacht as part of the western campaign .

Economy and Infrastructure

Tourism plays an important role in Wihr-au-Val. There are several hotels and restaurants. The town gate la Porte fortifiée de Wihr-au-Val is one of the places of interest .
