Metzeral (Alsatian Matzeral ) is a French commune with 1060 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). She is a member of the Vallée de Munster municipal association .
geography
Metzeral is located in the Fecht valley , at the junction of the Sondernach and Mittlach valleys , about six kilometers from Munster . The territory of the municipality includes several peaks of the Vosges and is located in the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park .
history
Metzeral was founded in 817, making it the oldest community in the Münster valley. After Metzeral belonged to the Abbey of Münster for a long time , it joined the valley community and the city of Münster in 1287.
The primary school was founded in 1737. After the French Revolution , Metzeral became an independent municipality, and after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 it was German. In 1893, the railway line that was built between Münster and Colmar in 1868 was extended to Metzeral. During the First World War , Metzeral was in the front line and was badly destroyed. During the Second World War it was spared from fighting. On February 5, 1945, it was liberated by Allied troops.

Attractions
Worth seeing are the Wormsa Valley, the Fischboedle, Schiessrothried and Altenweiher lakes, the Hohneck massif and the Église de l'Emm (also a memorial to the soldiers who died in 1915 at the bataille de Metzeral ).

Through the village leading department road D10. The Colmar – Metzeral line is now operated as line 17 by the TER Alsace regional railway company.
