Volgelsheim is a French commune with 2,668 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the canton of Ensisheim in the arrondissement of Colmar-Ribeauvillé in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). The municipality is the seat of the Pays Rhin-Brisach municipal association comprising 21 municipalities .
geography
The village is located in the French part of the Upper Rhine Plain, not far from the Rhine, approximately at the level of Breisach . Neighboring communities are Biesheim in the north, Vogelgrun in the east, Algolsheim in the south and Neuf-Brisach in the west . Départementsstrasse D 415 runs south of the village, coming from the Breisach Rhine crossing and heading towards Colmar .
history
Volgelsheim was first mentioned in 739 under the name Folcoaldeshaim . The place name changed several times over the centuries to the current spelling. From 1871 to 1918 Volgelsheim belonged to the German Empire with the realm of Alsace-Lorraine . During this time, the station on the Freiburg – Colmar railway line was built in Prussian style in 1880 , where the Neuf-Brisach – Bantzenheim line later branched off, and in 1902 a barracks for the Prussian army . The station was in 1937 in the film The Great Illusion by Jean Renoir to see.
Until 1992 Volgelsheim was a garrison of the French army ( Caserne Abbatucci ).

Museum railway
A museum railway runs from Volgelsheim on a 13 km long section of the former railway line to Marckolsheim. Rail journeys are offered on Sundays and public holidays from May to September in connection with a boat trip on the Rhine by the Chemin de Fer Touristique du Rhin association .
