Beblenheim (German Bebelnheim ) is a French commune with 941 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It is part of the Pays de Ribeauvillé municipal association .
geography
Beblenheim is located in the western Upper Rhine Plain on the eastern edge of the Vosges, about twelve kilometers north of Colmar. Neighboring communities are Mittelwihr (1.2 km), Bennwihr (2 km), Zellberg (2.6 km), Hunawihr (4.5 km), Ribeauvillé (4.9 km) and Sigolsheim (5 km).
history
In 1128 the place was mentioned for the first time under the name Babilenheim in a land register of the Marmoutier monastery .
In the Middle Ages, the place belonged to the Counts of Eguisheim , after their extinction in 1147 it went to the County of Pfirt . By marriage, Beblenheim went to the Counts of Horbourg , who sold the place to the House of Württemberg in 1324 . The Bishop of Strasbourg Berthold von Buchegg was also interested in this area, but in a contract with the Württemberg people in 1534 agreed that the village would remain with them until the French Revolution .
In the years 1349, 1359 and 1385 the population fell sharply due to the plague epidemics . In 1870 39 people died from a smallpox epidemic .
From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Beblenheim belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the district of Rappoltsweiler in the district of Upper Alsace .

Buildings
In the village there is the Gothic Nicholas Fountain ( Fontaine Saint-Nicolas ), also known as the cane fountain, from the 16th century and tombstones from the 15th and 17th centuries at the Saint-Sébastien church. The place is known for its Renaissance houses .
economy
Viticulture plays a decisive economic role in Beblenheim . The wine village is on the Alsace Wine Route . The single layer Sonnenglanz belongs to the Alsace Grand Cru vineyards.
Personalities
- Chrétien Oberlin (1831–1861), Mayor of Beblenheim and founder of the Colmar Wine Institute, was born here.
- Christian Pfister (1857–1933), historian, was born here on February 13, 1857.
