On the French side, the Rhine canal runs parallel to the natural stream. At the level of Vogelgrün the canal contains a barrage with a run-of-river power station . The Colmar - Freiburg im Breisgau trunk road ( D 415 in France, Bundesstrasse 31 in Germany) runs over the dam . The D52 runs parallel to the Rhine. The two streets cross north of the village center. The district is mainly used for agriculture, forest is mainly found on the spell between the Rhine canal and the Rhine. The neighboring French communities are Algolsheim , Volgelsheim , Biesheim , Obersaasheim and Geiswasser .

history

Due to its location in a former meander of the Rhine and the risk of flooding that existed before the Rhine was straightened, Vogelgrun is much younger than the localities in the vicinity. The ban belonged to Biesheim for a long time and was then acquired by Breisach in 1568, which sold it to Count Waldner von Freundstein in 1756. This ceded it to France in 1770. In 1805 the place was raised to a municipality. From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Vogelgrün belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Colmar district in the Upper Alsace district .

The place name Vogelgrün is not derived from a green bird , rather the part of the name "green" indicates a resting place for migratory birds on the Rhine.
