Bischwihr (German Bischweier ) is a French commune with 1,039 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It belongs to the arrondissement of Colmar-Ribeauvillé and the canton of Colmar-2 .

geography

The municipality is located in the Upper Rhine Plain, about six kilometers east of Colmar . The neighboring communities are Fortschwihr , Holtzwihr , Wickerschwihr and Wihr-en-Plaine . Immediately to the east of the village runs the small river Blind , which partly forms the border with Fortschwihr.

history

It was first mentioned in the 12th century under the name "Bischoveswilre" - the bishop's hamlet, so to speak. At that time the village was under the rule of the Horburger and in 1324 passed to that of Württemberg. On the occasion of the Reformation , Bischwihr became Protestant in 1535. In 1687 Alsace and thus Bischwihr were defeated by the German Empire to France , but remained in the possession of the Württemberg people until the French Revolution . The Augsburg religious peace did not apply in France, and so Catholicism was allowed again in the village. From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Bischwihr belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Colmar district in the Upper Alsace district .
