history
The place name is probably derived from "Baldinga", which means "among the people of Baldo". The first documented mention of the place comes from the year 762. As an Alemannic clan settlement, the place was probably built in the 3rd to 5th centuries. Since 1415 Bahlingen belonged to the margraviate of Baden and thus became Protestant during the Reformation . In the Thirty Years' War and again in the wars of Louis XIV , the place was almost completely destroyed. The place survived the two world wars largely undamaged.
Between 1770 and 1776, Bahlingen was, along with Teningen and Dietlingen, one of the model villages in the margraviate of Baden , where the economic system of physiocracy was introduced. It was the world's only known attempt at a practical test of this economic theory, one of whose supporters in Germany was the economist Johann August Schlettwein , who is said to have convinced Margrave Karl Friedrich of this system. The central thesis of physiocratism, which was drafted in France, is that agriculture is the only source of wealth and that value creation occurs only in this economic sector. The experiment began in Dietlingen in 1770 and, after a modification (1795), was definitely stopped in 1801. In Bahlingen and Teningen, the experiment, in which the so-called "Einsteuer" (impôt unique) was introduced, began in 1771 and was ended again in 1776.
On September 1, 1996, the municipality officially received the addition am Kaiserstuhl .
climate
The city is located in one of the warmest areas in Germany, at the Kaiserstuhl. The Mediterranean climate is reflected in the quality of the wines grown.

coat of arms
Blazon : "In a split shield in front in gold a red sloping bar, behind in blue a silver winemaker's knife with a black handle over an overturned silver ploughshare."
Since the 14th century the place belonged to the margraviate of Hachberg, which was sold to the margraves of Baden in 1415. Viticulture has been practiced here since time immemorial. In 1482 a sales deed was provided with the Bahlinger court seal, which shows the Baden sloping beam in the semicircular, split shield in front and a vine knife turned out to the right in the back. This seal was used until a new seal was obtained in 1665, which, like a stamp used between the second half of the 18th and the first quarter of the 19th century, is already provided with the coat of arms, which has been retained to this day. The colors of the coat of arms were determined by the municipality in 1913 following a proposal from the General State Archives in 1906.
Town twinning
Bahlingen has had partnerships with France since 1996 . Since then, people have felt connected to the communities of Bischwihr , Holtzwihr , Riedwihr and Wickerschwihr in neighboring Alsace . There are always regular visits and joint events.
Economy and Infrastructure
For a long time, Bahlingen was shaped by agriculture and viticulture . In the last 100 years the place has seen a surge in modernization. Bahlingen was connected to the railway network (in Riegel to the Rhine Valley Railway ) by the Kaiserstuhl Railway ; In the following years the infrastructure was steadily expanded. In 1967 a new school building was built, and in 1984 the Silberberghalle was completed. Since the 1970s, industry, trade and commerce have increasingly settled, which today offer around 1,000 jobs. A focus here is on tool and mold making , and internationally active companies such as Otto Männer Holding AG are also represented. In addition, numerous new commercial and residential areas were developed.
Viticulture
The viticulture in the Kaiserstuhl extends to the Romans back. Around 280 hectares are currently cultivated in Bahlingen. The grapes are grown and marketed by wineries and the cooperative "Die Winzer vom Silberberg". Grown in Bahlingen grape varieties are Müller-Thurgau , Pinot Noir , Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris .
On December 19, 1962, the Bahlingen winegrowers' cooperative transferred the processing of the harvest on a wage basis to the Badischer Winzergenossenschaften central winery in Breisach. The Bahlinger Winzergenossenschaft has around 450 members who grow grapes on 140 hectares.
traffic
Bahlingen am Kaiserstuhl is located on the Kaiserstuhlbahn . This is currently operated by SWEG, will be put out to tender in the coming years and should be electrified by 2018. Coming
via the autobahn connection to the federal autobahn 5 , exit 59 (Riegel) from Karlsruhe or from exit 60 (Teningen) from Basel , Bahlingen can be reached after around 5 kilometers on well-developed country and district roads. The district town of Emmendingen is approx. 10 km away, Freiburg im Breisgau approx. 18 km, Strasbourg in France approx. 70 km and Basel in Switzerland approx. 90 km.
The good transport connections have led to the settlement of many well-known companies in the newly created industrial park at the eastern entrance to the town. Many commuters also live here, who drive to work in the nearby towns and cities every day. To do this, they often use public transport such as the Kaiserstuhlbahn or buses, but many destinations can also be reached quickly by bike.
