The municipality of Keltern is located on the edge of the northern Black Forest at an altitude of 190 to 270 meters in a hilly landscape, near the cities of Pforzheim (8 km) and Karlsruhe (21 km). The northern Black Forest ends 7 km south of Keltern in the municipality of Straubenhardt. In Keltern the fir forest changes into deciduous forest. The relatively mild climate in Keltern is characterized by the Rhine Valley near Karlsruhe and the Pfinztal. This means that wine can be grown in wine presses.

Fir and mixed forests form half of the district with a total of 940 hectares. Due to their scenic beauty, the typical orchards and rare plants, large areas are designated as landscape and nature reserves.

Keltern is crossed by the Black Forest North Rim Trail.

Community structure

The municipality of Keltern consists of the five districts Dietlingen (3929 inhabitants), Ellmendingen (2493 inhabitants), Weiler (1358 inhabitants), Niebelsbach (1023 inhabitants) and Dietenhausen (393 inhabitants) (as of December 31, 2016). The districts are spatially identical to the earlier municipalities of the same name, their official name is in the form "Keltern- ...".

The districts of Dietenhausen, Ellmendingen, Niebelsbach and Weiler only include the villages of the same name. The Dietlingen district includes the village of Dietlingen and the houses Gauchhaele, Im Fuchsloch and Reihelberg. The Delebrunnen desert is located in the district of Dietenhausen .

The districts of Dietlingen, Ellmendingen and Dietenhausen used to belong to Baden, while Niebelsbach belonged to Württemberg. The “Grenzsägmühle” restaurant in Ellmendingen still reminds of the border, although the old mill no longer exists.

history

The first documented contact with the districts of Ellmendingen and Dietenhausen is dated to the year 919. The district Dietlingen is also mentioned in the 11th century. Relics of a former fortified church in the Dietlingen district, which was redesigned in 1410 to match the Gothic style, date from 1250. In 1770, the stone substance of the former Weiler castle was partly used for church construction.

In the 16th century the Ellmendinger Kelters was built, which served as a wine press until 1937. A new building, which was opened in 1939, took over the function of the previous building. Various other wine presses that were used for viticulture were built in the districts of Dietlingen, Niebelsbach and Dietenhausen.

From 1901 to 1967 today's districts of Keltern were connected to traffic by the Albtalbahn railway line , called the Panoramabahn, which ran along the mountain and became the Pforzheimer Kleinbahn in 1911 . The partial destruction of the line by the tornado of 1968 finally put an end to the continued maintenance of this small railway, with the number of passengers falling at the time.

The community Keltern was formed on March 30, 1972 by the union of the communities Dietlingen, Ellmendingen, Niebelsbach and Weiler. As early as July 1, 1971, the community of Dietenhausen was incorporated into Ellmendingen.

Districts

Dietenhausen

Dietenhausen is the smallest suburb of Keltern with 399 inhabitants. The place was called Theotelenhusen when it was first mentioned in 919 . Until the 17th century, the rulership of the community was very complicated. The Cistercian Abbey of Herrenalb and the Junkers von Enzberg had rights to the place. Through the reformation of the monastery in 1536, Württemberg received local authority . The margraviate of Baden ruled the place from 1603. First Dietenhausen belonged to the Langensteinbach office , then to the Stein office . From 1803 then to the Oberamt, then to the district office and from 1936 to 1972 to the Pforzheim district.

Dietlingen

Dietlingen was probably founded in the 11th century. The Protestant church was built around 1250 and renewed around 1410. Between 1771 and 1801 Dietlingen was one of the model villages in the margraviate of Baden , along with Bahlingen and Teningen , where the economic system of physiocratism was introduced. It was the only known attempt in the world to test this economic theory in practice, and one of its supporters in Germany was the economist Johann August Schlettwein , who is said to have convinced Margrave Karl Friedrich of this system. The central thesis of physiocratism, which was drafted in France, is that agriculture is the only source of wealth and that value creation occurs only in this economic sector. The experiment began in Dietlingen in 1770 and, after a modification (1795), was definitely stopped in 1801. In Bahlingen and Teningen (at the Kaiserstuhl) the experiment, in which the so-called "Einsteuer" (impôt unique) was introduced, began in 1771 and was ended in 1776. This is Keltern's largest district with 3929 inhabitants. Dietlingen has a primary and secondary school with a technical secondary school.

Ellmendingen

Ellmendingen was first mentioned in 919 under the name Alsmindiga in documents from the Reichenau monastery. The foundation stone for the church was laid on Corpus Christi day in 1404. Ellmendingen is Keltern's second largest district and the location of a primary school. The administrative center of the municipality is also located here. Until the dissolution in 2015, Ellmendingen was the seat of the wine cooperative Keltern-Ellmendingen eG. The historical wine press with a local museum can be visited here. The Arnbach flows through the town center. There are currently 2502 inhabitants in Ellmendingen.

Niebelsbach

Niebelsbach was created in 1927 through the merger of the towns of Oberniebelsbach and Unterstiebelsbach. Niebelsbach is the only district that belonged to Württemberg and was first mentioned around 1300. Niebelsbach has 989 inhabitants.

Hamlet , which is crossed by the Pfinz brook, was first mentioned in a document in 1219 and has 1364 inhabitants.

Keltern is crossed by the L562. In addition to the B10, this is the main southern connection between Karlsruhe / Ettlingen and Pforzheim. The next motorway connections are in Karlsbad and Pforzheim-West: BAB8 towards BAB5 Dreieck Karlsruhe and BAB81 Leonberger Dreieck and Stuttgarter Kreuz, each 10 minutes away. The BAB5 motorway towards Basel / Switzerland can also be reached directly via the Ettlingen / Karlsruhe Süd exit.

The next long-distance train stations are in Pforzheim and Karlsruhe with a connection to the ICE network and the French TGV to Paris, Lyon and Marseille. In the northern neighboring municipality of Remchingen there is a connection to the S5 of the Karlsruhe Transport Association towards Karlsruhe and Pforzheim. This is also the closest DB AG train station to the R5 regional train to Karlsruhe or Stuttgart. In the western neighboring municipality of Karlsbad there is a connection to the S11 in Ittersbach and Langensteinbach to Karlsruhe via Ettlingen.

Public transport in Keltern is operated by the VPE ( Verkehrsverbund Pforzheim-Enzkreis ). The bus lines 720, 721, 722 connect all districts with Pforzheim and the neighboring communities.

Culture and sights

As a small community, Keltern is the location of the Grüner Stern Keltern women's basketball team , which plays in the Bundesliga. The club has stood for this sport in the region for over 35 years. The first women's team of the GSK has played in the 2nd Bundesliga South (DBBL) since the 2010s and made it to the Bundesliga in the 2014/2015 season. Since the 2015/2016 season, the women have been playing in the 1st Bundesliga (DBBL) as Rutronik Stars Keltern for the German championship. The GSK and the Bundesliga team Rutronik Stars are now a division of FC Nöttingen from the neighboring municipality of Remchingen. In the 2017/2018 season, the team with captain Stina Barnert won the German championship. The men's basketball players played at their best around 2010 in the Oberliga-West, Baden-Württemberg.

Buildings

Fortified churches in the Gothic style from the 15th century have been preserved in Ellmendingen and Dietlingen . The Barbarakirche in Ellmendingen has special windows with "biblical traffic signs". There is also a wine press from the 16th century in the village . Also worth mentioning is the wonderfully located Pankratius Chapel in Niebelsbach, which was also built in the 15th century and still has its old, hand-carved chairs.

Viticulture

Keltern belongs to the Kraichgau area of ​​the Baden wine-growing region . Several winegrowers produce wine on around 35 hectares, and most of it is also marketed on site. Typical are Spätburgunder (pinot noir), Schwarzriesling (pinot meunier) as red wines, as well as Rivaner and white Burgundy varieties as white wines. The two largest winegrowers in town operate according to the guidelines of organic viticulture and offer their wines with the Ecovin logo.
