history

Early history

The name Illingen is probably derived from the Alemannic personal name Illo . Illingen was first mentioned in writing in 766 in the so-called Lorsch Codex on the occasion of a donation to the Lorsch Monastery . During the time of the tribal duchies, the place belonged to the Duchy of Franconia . However, the remains of excavations from Roman manors suggest that there was an earlier settlement from Roman times. Archaeological finds from the Stone Age on the Illinger Markung indicate at least an earlier temporary presence of settlers at this time.

In the late Middle Ages Illingen belonged to the area of the Counts of Calw . They held power for over 200 years until 1260 . Illingen then came to the County of Vaihingen . From bitter wars between the Counts of Württemberg , the Count Palatine of Tübingen , the Counts of Calw and Vaihingen , the Count of Württemberg ultimately emerged victorious.

The location on the connecting roads between the Roman fort Cannstatt and the upper Rhine in the direction of Strasbourg and the middle Rhine in the direction of Mainz , which already forked in Illingen in the early days of the Christian era, made Illingen a center of mail transport.

Modern history

Different burdens from wars hit Illingen several times: The Thirty Years' War passed relatively lightly compared to the neighboring towns in terms of destruction, but population losses due to plague and famine were great. Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars burdened Illingen with billeting and requisitions. In the Franco-German War of 1870/71 there were no Illingen victims to complain about, but the First World War claimed 59 dead on Illingen's side. At the end of the Second World War, fighting took place in early April 1945 before Illingen was occupied by French troops. In addition to several civilian casualties from these fighting, there were 157 people killed and missing in World War II. The subsequent occupation was marked by violence, particularly against the female civilian population.

Political Affiliation

Politically, Illingen belonged to the Wuerttemberg Monastery Office Maulbronn since 1504. Illingen was only assigned to the Vaihingen office between 1762 and 1766. With the implementation of the new administrative structure in the Kingdom of Württemberg , Illingen moved from the monastery office to the Maulbronn Oberamt in 1806 . After the upper offices were dissolved in 1938 during the Nazi era in Württemberg , Illingen became part of the Vaihingen district . In 1945 the place came into the American zone of occupation and thus belonged to the newly founded state of Württemberg-Baden , which was incorporated into the current state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952. The district reform in Baden-Württemberg made Illingen the easternmost municipality of the Enzkreis, which was newly founded in 1973.

For the history of the district of Schützingen, see Schützingen .

Incorporations

As part of the administrative reform in Baden-Württemberg, the community of Schützingen was incorporated into Illingen on January 1, 1974.

coat of arms

Municipal coat of arms

Blazon :
In a shield divided by blue and gold diagonally to the right, a golden flag fluttering to the right on an oblique left red pole with a golden tip, and a red key at the bottom.

Explanation :
After the community of Schützingen became a district of Illingen as part of the incorporation, the common community coat of arms had to be adapted accordingly. In 1974 the new coat of arms was awarded by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of the Interior. Since then, the municipal coat of arms has borne elements from the previous Schützinger and Illingen coats of arms. The yellow flag on a blue background stands for the district of Illingen; the red key on a yellow background stands for the district of Schützingen.

Culture and sights

Buildings

The Protestant Cyriakus Church was consecrated in 1488 and goes back to an older church in the town, first mentioned in 774. The church was reformed in the 16th century.

The Catholic Church of St. Joseph was built for the town's Catholic community, which had grown immensely after the Second World War, and was consecrated in 1957.

The Posthof is a three-story half-timbered house built in 1583. It came to Maulbronn Abbey in 1669 and was used from 1812 to 1851 as a post office and post office for the Thurn-und-Taxis-Lehnspost.

There are also numerous other historical half-timbered buildings in the village, including above all many old farmsteads and farm houses in Dillmannstrasse, Kirchstrasse and Hauptstrasse.

The Illingen oil mill has a completely preserved facility from 1904 with an electric drive from 1922. The technical cultural monument can be visited by appointment.

In the years 1977 to 1982, under Mayor Veigel, the town center, which still dominates Illingen today, was built, consisting of a town hall, service facilities, apartments and a fire station that has since been converted . The buildings designed by the Karlsruhe architect Lothar Götz are today regional evidence of the brutalist architecture that was widespread at the time .

The local sculptor Wilhelm Hager created various art in public spaces, including the new cemetery fountain, the memorial and the relief on the Stromberghalle.
