Elchesheim district

Elchesheim

The community of Elchesheim is first mentioned in a document in 1102. At that time, Elchesheim was an estate that consisted of a manor and a castle. This castle was the property of Emperor Heinrich IV. It was used by him and his entourage as a temporary residence on the extended hunts. One year before the Peace of Mainz (1103), Emperor Heinrich IV donated the entire area of Elchesheim to the Speyer Monastery . The castle has long since disappeared and forgotten. The first numerical documents about the inhabitants of Elchesheim can be found in the Speyer visit protocol from 1683. 35 years after the end of the Thirty Years' War, 18 Catholic families (around 100 souls) are listed in this document. Measured against the great casualties of this war, the population is estimated to be around 200 around the year 1600.

As soon as the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War was over, in 1689 French troops under General Mélac destroyed many villages and towns, which also affected Elchesheim and the neighboring towns. The unrest that reappeared in the immediate vicinity around the middle of the 19th century, the economic hardship and above all the uncertainty about the future must have been what caused many residents to leave their homeland to emigrate to southeast Europe, Russia or America . Despite the wars of 1870–1871 and the two world wars, a continuous growth in population could be observed from then on.

District Illingen

Illingen

According to the local researchers, Illingen was founded in the 10th or even 9th century. In the document book on the history of the bishops of Speyer, the place was first mentioned in 960. Existing old files suggest that Illingen was one of those villages that had suffered greatly from the perils of the Rhine from the earliest times. The files also show that Illingen was formerly a branch church of the Mothern municipality on the left bank of the Rhine. From this it can also be concluded with certainty that an arm of the Rhine flowed past Illingen in the 15th century, as the old maps also show. This meant that Illingen used to be on the left bank of the Rhine at times before the Rhine was straightened by Tulla.

Due to the continually changing bends in the river Rhine, the residents of Illingen had to relocate their place several times. The Rhine traffic map from 1590 also shows that the village was at the mouth of the Murg at that time. Illingen belonged to the Speyer Monastery and was subordinate to the Lauterburg Oberamt. From 1773 Illingen was supplied by the parish of Elchesheim, before it was officially a branch of the parish of Elchesheim from 1803-1948 and 1952-1967. Illingen developed into a residential community in the 1950s, fishing and agriculture decreased in importance.
