About this picture

Rheinmünster is a municipality in Baden-Württemberg that belongs to the Rastatt district.

geography

Geographical location

Rheinmünster is located in the Upper Rhine Rift between Baden-Baden , Bühl and the Rhine . The individual sub-municipalities have not grown together and do not form a uniform settlement area.

Neighboring communities

The district of the entire municipality borders in the north on the communities Hügelsheim and Sinzheim , in the east on Bühl and in the south on Lichtenau (Baden) . In the west, the district is bounded by the Rhine, which is both the state and federal border with France . The neighboring Alsatian municipality is Drusenheim .

Community structure

The municipality of Rheinmünster consists of the former municipalities of Greffern , Schwarzach , Söllingen and Stollhofen . The village of Greffern belongs to the former municipality of Greffern. The villages of Schwarzach and Hildmannsfeld and the Hubershof homestead belong to the former community of Schwarzach . The village of Söllingen and the Rheinbauhütte house belong to the former municipality of Söllingen. The village of Stollhofen, the Heckenmühle homestead and the Jägerhof houses belong to the former municipality of Stollhofen.

In the area of the former municipality of Greffern lie the deserts of Oberowe and Oedenhof, in the area of the former municipality of Schwarzach the deserts of Feldern and Langhurst and in the area of the former municipality of Stollhofen the Hartung desert.

history

The community was created on October 1, 1974 through the merger of the formerly independent communities Schwarzach, Greffern and Stollhofen (all in the district of Bühl until the end of 1972 ) and Söllingen (also before 1973 in the district of Rastatt).

The parish name comes from the pastor Karlheinz Willmann, who grew up in Söllingen , and was determined in a competition. It reflects two of the most important historical influences: The Schwarzach Abbey of the Benedictines , secularized in 1803 , and the Rhine , which limits the district to the west.

Religions

The community is shaped by Roman Catholicism . There are still four Catholic churches in the village today, and 4223 (as of June 30, 2012) residents, i. H. 64 percent are members of the Catholic Church. Furthermore there are 1005 evangelical believers (15%) who are spiritually cared for from Lichtenau . Ten residents belong to other religious communities, while 1407 residents (21%) gave no information about their religion.

politics

Localities

Until 1998, the joint municipal council was staffed equally according to locality. At the local level there was a local council and a local councilor each until 2019. Since 2010 there have been discussions about abolishing local councils in order to save costs. In July 2018 it was finally decided that Schwarzach will no longer have a local council or mayor from the election period beginning in 2019.

Municipal council

The municipal council consists of the elected voluntary councilors and the mayor as chairman. The mayor is entitled to vote in the municipal council. The local election on May 26, 2019 in Rheinmünster led to the following final result. The turnout was 58.67% (2014: 49.9%).

Community partnerships

The municipality maintains a partnership with the Sère et Garonne in southern France. Reactivated in 1993, the partnership goes back to contacts between the then Stollhofen community and the Castelmayran community since 1956. The “ Place de Saint Nicolas de la Grave ” in Schwarzach and the “ Place de Castelmayran ” in Stollhofen are an expression of the European idea and friendship with France.

Economy and Infrastructure

Rheinmünster's economy was shaped for a long time by a branch of the American chemical company Dow Chemical in Greffern. The plant in Greffern was built in 1965 and was the Dow Group's oldest production site in Germany. In the second half of 2019, the Dows production facilities were taken over by Trinseo . With this takeover, Trinseo expanded its existing production at the Rheinmünster location. Together with branches of the companies Evonik , Olin and Ravago , the Trinseo site forms the "Rheinmünster Chemical Park". In the course of the sale of the shares in Dow, Trinseo also took over the operation of the chemical park and was responsible for site-related services such as maintenance, logistics and disposal from the takeover. Historically, shipping, fishing, and agriculture were of great importance. The Canadian NATO base CFB Baden-Soellingen (districts Hügelsheim , Rheinmünster) was also an important factor until the withdrawal of the armed forces in 1993. The Baden-Airpark with airport and industrial area has been privately operated there since 1997 .

In 2006, Rheinmünster was the only debt-free municipality in the Rastatt district (source: Baden-Württemberg State Statistical Office).

traffic

The airport Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden , the second largest commercial airport in Baden-Württemberg, located mostly on the Rhine Munster area.

A rail freight line of the SWEG , formerly part of the Mittelbadische Eisenbahnen , leads to the chemical plant in Greffern .

The Federal Highway 36 led by Rheinmünster, 2016 it was downgraded from national road 75 miles.

The car ferry “Drusus” connects Greffern with Drusenheim across the Rhine .

education

In addition to a secondary school and a secondary school with a Werkrealschule, there are also three primary schools in the municipality. Rheinmünster also offers four kindergartens.
