Local history

Stone walls were first mentioned in a document in 1239 . Various coin finds, foundations of Roman buildings and a Roman milestone found in the Gold Canal suggest that the place was much older. The place name comes from the fact that the inhabitants of the place had built stone walls as protective walls for their dwellings in the once richly island-rich floodplain landscape of the Rhine.

Stone walls was one of the most important rafting villages on the Upper Rhine, which made the town prosperous for centuries. In the 18th and 19th centuries it was the stone wall raftsmen who shaped the nationwide reputation and economic interests. The place owed its special role as a transshipment point and main market to them, which brought certain privileges in the region.
