Steinmaur (dialect: Steimer ) is a municipality in the district of Dielsdorf in the canton of Zurich in Switzerland .

There used to be a boar on Steinmaur's coat of arms in red. This animal was replaced by the ibex at a community meeting.

Steinmaur is located in the Zurich Unterland and is a so-called suburban residential community and belongs to the Zurich metropolitan area. The air distance to Zurich is 15 km. Of the 939 ha area, 57% is used for agriculture, 29% for forest, 5% for transport and 8% for settlements.

The districts of Obersteinmaur, Niedersteinmaur , Schibler and Sünikon belong to the community .

population

On October 31, 2004, the community had 2904 inhabitants (2849 in the previous year), of which 401 were foreigners, which corresponds to a share of about 13.8% foreigners. The population density per hectare of settlement area is around 23 people.

1414 people (48.7%) are Reformed and 811 (27.92%) are Roman Catholics. The remaining 679 people (23.38%) belong to other religious communities or are of no religion.

Steinmaur has a kindergarten and a primary school. The upper school is attended in Dielsdorf.

According to the 1998 company census, there are 127 workplaces in Steinmaur (39 industry / trade and 88 services) with a total of 610 employees (212 industry / trade and 398 services).

traffic

Steinmaur is located on the Wehntalbahn (Oberglatt – Niederweningen), which is served by the S 15 Rapperswil - Uster - Zurich HB - Oberglatt - Niederweningen . The S 15 trains run every half hour.

From the Steinmaur train station in the Niedersteinmaur district, the PostBus- operated ZVV bus lines 510 (Steinmaur – Oberglatt) and 535 ( Niederhasli - Dielsdorf - Stadel b. N. ) serve the community center, the community hall , Obersteinmaur and Heitlig (only 535 ).

The main road 17 from Zurich to Döttingen leads through Steinmaur.

history

Steinmaur was once founded by the Romans. That is why one can still read the name Steinmurico in the first written mention of Steinmaur . The Reformed Church was first mentioned in 1274.
