The strong growth was triggered by the proximity to the city of Zurich and the construction of the Zurich-Kloten airport and the construction of the Zurich-Bülach railway.
history
The oldest surviving documentary mention of the place name was in 1141 as Niderunglatto . However, Nöschikon is much older. During the Alemannic conquest (between 500 and 700) a clan chief named Nosso must have settled with his people in Nossinchova .
The community area belonged to the Obervogtei Neuamt from 1442 to 1798 . The district to the right of the Glatt, in contrast, belonged to the County of Kyburg and is still called the county today.
In 1840 the previous civil parish of Niederglatt was separated from the Niederhasli parish by resolution of the Grand Council of the Canton of Zurich and declared an independent political parish.
Infrastructure
Niederglatt has always been the center of Neuamt. The notary's office for the communities of the former Neuamt is still in Niederglatt today.
In 1972 the community received its own cemetery. In 1980 a church, a high school and a larger multi-purpose hall were completed in the new village center of Eichi. In 1990 this center was supplemented with a community center and an old people's home with 40 beds. The communities of Höri , Neerach , Stadel and Weiach are also involved in the retirement home .
economy
The most important company in the 20th century was Metallwerke Refonda AG, right by the train station. There, new and old aluminum scrap was melted down for recycling. The smelting plant was shut down for economic reasons in 1992 after it became known that the limit value for dioxin deposits in the area had been exceeded ( soil contamination ). Allega GmbH is new there, initially like Refonda a subsidiary of Alusuisse , now part of the Alcan group. The ISCO company also prints packaging material at the train station. Another company is sto AG, which manufactures facade insulation systems, plasters and paints. Niederglatt also has a number of businesses.
Niederglatt was originally a pure farming village. After the construction of the railways to Wehntal and Bülach, industrial companies set up shop around 1900, which brought new income opportunities. Today there are only a few farmers who are mainly active in arable farming, the traditional economy in the Zurich Unterland.
Part of the population is employed in local or regional trades, but the larger part in the airport region and in the city of Zurich.
