geography
The shape of the plateau mountain sloping to the west, north and east in steep slopes suggests at first glance a formation of the Table Jura, similar to the Randen . In fact, the Irchel is not part of the Jura Mountains, but rather belongs to the molasse zone of the Swiss Central Plateau with its gravel slab resting on a molasse base.
The most important peaks of the ridge are:
- Hochwacht (Signal) 668.4 m
- Hörnli 666 m
- Hebelstein (Grosser Hebelstein) 659 m
- Schartenflue 667 m |
- Forenirchel 674 m
- Buechemer-Irchel 694 m
The communities Berg am Irchel , Buch am Irchel , Freienstein-Teufen and Dättlikon have a share in the Irchel .
Berg am Irchel is the municipality in the Zürcher Weinland with the greatest difference in altitude in the municipality. The difference in altitude is approx. 350 m (from approx. 330 m on the Rhine to approx. 680 m on the Irchel).
The view over the Flaachtal to Germany , for example from the Irchelturm (above Buch am Irchel), or from the Rütelbuck make the ridge a recreational area for hikers, bikers and nature lovers. A historic wine-growing area , which is part of the Zürcher Weinland , is located on the slopes .
history
In Roman times , the Irchel was part of the Rhenish Limes . In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Irchel was part of the Hochwachten alarm system of the Canton of Zurich. The Hochwachten alarm system was very fast; in the canton of Zurich, for example, all 23 Hochwachten were able to transmit the signal in 15 minutes. The most famous Zurich Hochwachten were on the Lägern , the Irchel and the Uetliberg .
