Zurich wine country

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Zürcher Weinland is a region in the north of the Swiss canton of Zurich . With around 220 hectares, the region is the largest wine-growing region in the canton of Zurich, which, together with its other wine-growing regions, is the most important wine-growing canton in German-speaking Switzerland .

The Andelfingen district is generally referred to as "Zürcher Weinland", but there is no clear political definition of this region. The Zürcher Weinland is bordered in the west and north by the Rhine , in the east towards the canton of Thurgau by the Cholfirst ridge and in the south by the Irchel . It is still a predominantly rural area. The climate is comparatively mild and sunny. In addition to the named grapes, asparagus, melons, tobacco and hops are also grown here.

Possible repository location

Since the 1990s, the Zürcher Weinland has been considered a possible location for a repository for radioactive waste due to its Opalinus Clay rock layers in the geological subsurface . In January 2015, Nagra restricted its open-ended search to three locations for high-level radioactive waste (HAA) and six locations for low and medium-level radioactive waste (SMA): Zurich Northeast (ZH, TG), Nördlich Lägern (ZH, AG) and Jura-Ost (AG) for highly radioactive waste. These locations are (as of 7/2019) possible storage locations for HAA and SMA waste. The decision will only be made in the further course of the Nagra and ENSI proceedings , as well as the federal parliament and, if necessary, a referendum at the political level.

The surface systems for the warehouse would be in the area of the communities Rheinau ZH , Benken and Marthalen .
