Rio Tinto Alcan (now Rio Tinto Aluminum ) is one of the largest aluminum manufacturers in the world and is a subsidiary of the Rio Tinto Group . The company is divided into three divisions :

history

The company was founded in 1902 as a subsidiary of Alcoa and was named "Northern Aluminum Company Limited". In 1925 the name was changed to " Al uminum Company of Can ada Limited" and 1928, the elimination of Alcoa as an independent company. In 1945 the company was registered as Alcan .

With Jacques Bougie , who was appointed CEO of Alcan in 1993 , the company embarked on a worldwide expansion course. Bougie stepped down as CEO in 2001, shortly after he had acquired the Swiss Algroup for Alcan.

With the takeover of Alusuisse (2000), the packaging division of the former VAW and the French aluminum group Péchiney (2003), the group had grown strongly. However, at the beginning of 2005, most of the rolling mills were spun off into an independent listed company, Novelis .

In 2007 there was a takeover battle for Alcan. The British-Australian mining group Rio Tinto and the American company Alcoa tried to take over the group at times . Rio Tinto's offer was $ 39 billion. Alcoa previously offered $ 28 billion for Alcan. In July 2007, Alcoa withdrew its offer for Alcan.

The governing bodies of Rio Tinto and Alcan approved a takeover by Rio Tinto when the Brazilian corporation CVRD announced that it would make a takeover bid. A purchase price of US $ 38.7 billion has now been set and Alcan will continue to operate as a subsidiary of Rio Tinto. The company director and headquarters were retained. On October 23, 2007, Alcan was merged with the aluminum division of Rio Tinto and renamed Rio Tinto Alcan .

The packaging division was sold to Amcor in 2010 . In 2011, Alcan Engineered Products (aluminum processing) was spun off and has been an independent company called Constellium ever since .

In May 2015 it was announced that "Alcan" would be deleted from the company's name.
