The main aluminum producers

The list of the largest aluminum producers shows tables and graphics with precise information on the subject of aluminum .

overview

In 2016, the most important aluminum producer by far was the People's Republic of China (31.0 million tonnes), followed by Russia (3.6 million tonnes) and Canada (3.3 million tonnes), which together accounted for 65, 6 percent of the 57.6 million tons produced worldwide. In Europe, Norway , Iceland and Germany were the main producers.

Due to the high power consumption in the production of aluminum, numerous production plants have been built in countries with inexpensive energy in recent years, for example in Venezuela , Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates (oil, natural gas), Brazil (hydropower), Australia and South Africa (coal) and Iceland (hydropower, geothermal energy ). In contrast, production facilities were dismantled in countries with high electricity prices, for example in Germany.

The largest aluminum consumers are the USA , Japan , the People's Republic of China, Germany, Italy and France . The most important customer for aluminum is the automotive industry. Because of its low weight, aluminum is indispensable in the aircraft industry, in the packaging industry, in mechanical engineering and in building construction.

The production of aluminum is extremely energy-intensive. Over 40% of the production costs are energy costs, whereby mostly electrical energy is used. Corus' aluminum smelter in Voerde, for example, which produces 120,000 tons of aluminum annually with 500 employees, consumes as much electricity as a city with 250,000 inhabitants.

The industry is therefore suffering from the high electricity prices in Germany. The high electricity costs are the most important reason for the closure of the aluminum plants in Stade and Hamburg in 2005. The Dutch - British company Corus has also threatened to close its aluminum smelting works in Germany if competitive electricity prices cannot be negotiated. Corus and Trimet Aluminum AG have concluded electricity supply contracts with the power plant operators E.ON and RWE in order to reduce their energy costs and become more competitive.
