Aluminum Bahrain ( Alba ) is one of the world's largest aluminum manufacturers. The aluminum production in 2010 amounted to approx. 850,000 t.
The company headquarters with the production facilities is located in Askar on the southeast coast of the island state in the Persian Gulf. Corporate production makes (as of 2010) Bahrain the tenth largest aluminum producer in the world. The state of Bahrain (77%), the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (20%) and the local company Breton Investments (3%) are named as owners of the company .
Currently (as of July 2016) 5 potlines are in operation in the aluminum smelter . The Bechtel company was commissioned by Alba to build a sixth potline with a capacity of 540,000 tons per year. Annual production will thus increase to 1.5 million t by 2019. The total cost of the expansion (including a fifth power plant with an installed capacity of 1,350 MW) is estimated at USD 3.5 billion .
power plant
The electricity that is important for aluminum production is generated in a natural gas-fired power plant complex with four plants and a total output of 2,224 MW.
