Elkem is a company that produces “ solar gradesilicon , ferrosilicon , carbon electrodes and microsilica . Elkem is owned by China National Bluestar Group Co. Ltd. (Bluestar), which the company bought from Orkla in 2011 for $ 2 billion . 85 percent of the sister company Elkem Energi AS were excluded from the transaction .

The company supplies the construction, transport, mechanical engineering, packaging, aluminum, chemical and electronics industries. Elkem has 13 plants in Europe, North America, South America and Asia.

history

Elkem was founded in 1904 by Sam Eyde with the intention of developing furnaces and processes for electrical metals. In 1917 a ferro-alloy plant was purchased and Elkem began producing the Söderberg electrode .

During the 1960s and thereafter, Elkem expanded, particularly in Norway, through aluminum, mining and finished products. In 1972 Elkem was merged with Christiania Spigerverk and expanded internationally with ferro-alloys and steel. 1981–1984 Elkem Union Carbides bought plants in Norway and North America and in 1986 the plants in Thamshavn and Bjølvefossen . After 2000, Elkem acquired Icelandic Alloy, Remi Claeys Aluminum and Sapa .

Between 2002 and 2005 an acquisition battle took place between the American aluminum company Alcoa and Orkla. At its peak, Alcoa owned 40% of Elkem, but Orkla managed to buy out the majority of the shares. In 2005 Orkla took over all Elkem shares, so that Elkem became part of the Orkla Group.

In January 2011, Orkla signed a contract with China National Bluestar (Group), which is majority owned by China National Chemical Corporation ( ChemChina ), to sell Elkem including Elkem Silicon Materials, Elkem Foundry Products, Elkem Carbon and Elkem Solar.

In 2014 it was announced that Elkem would acquire Bluestar REC Solar , the solar business of Renewable Energy Corporation . REC Solar produced 954 MW solar modules in 2014 and employed 1,600 of its 1,700 employees in a solar factory in the Tuas industrial area , Singapore . The acquisition was completed in May 2015.

Carbon products

Elkem Carbon is the world's largest manufacturer of electrically calcined anthracite and graphite electrodes , which are used for the production of electrical steel , aluminum, silicon and other base metals. The production facilities are in Kristiansand (Norway), Shizuishan (China), Witbank (South Africa) and Vitória (Brazil). Another plant is currently being built near Bintulu ( Sarawak , Malaysia ).

Foundry products

The production of ferro-silicon and foundry alloys found in five plants instead: in Bjølvefossen (Norway), Bremanger (Norway), Chicoutimi (Quebec, Canada), Grundartangi (Iceland) and Shizuishan (China).

Ferrosilicon alloys are mainly used in steel production. Ferrosilicon-based pre- and inoculating alloys improve the properties of cast iron and are used e.g. B. used in wind generators, railways, cars and many other machines.

silicon

Elkem Silicon Materials is one of the world's leading suppliers of silicon and microsilica. Elkem operates three silicon plants in Norway (Bremanger, Sørfold (Salten) and Thamshavn ) and one plant in China (Yongdeng).

Silicon improves the properties of aluminum. It is also used in semiconductors and silicones . Microsilica is an extremely fine-grained silicon dioxide dust which is used as an additive in concrete, as a lining in boreholes, as an alternative to asbestos, in refractory materials , in fertilizers and in plastics.
