history
The site was visited by Jesuits from 1673 . In the summer of 1676 fur traders set up a trading post. The city itself was founded by Peter McLeod on August 24, 1842 after a concession in favor of the Hudson's Bay Company that forbade colonization expired.
At the beginning of the 20th century the city developed mainly industrially with a large pulp mill . From the Great Depression in 1929, Chicoutimi became more and more a regional commercial and administrative center.
In 2002 the city merged with neighboring cities and municipalities to form the new city of Saguenay .
