François Carrier

François Carrier (born June 5, 1961 in Chicoutimi , Québec ) is a Canadian musician ( soprano and alto saxophone ) and composer in the field of modern creative and improvised music .

Live and act

Carrier had been active in Vancouver since 1979; since 1982 he has been part of the Montreal jazz scene. Since 1990 he has worked in a trio with the drummer Michel Lambert and the bassist Pierre Côté. The album Intuition , which was nominated in 1998 by the Association québécoise de l'industrie du disque as “Jazz Album of the Year”, brought the trio international attention; on a European tour it also performed at the 1998 Montreux Jazz Festival . In the same year Carrier founded the Nouvel Ensemble de Musique Improvisée (NoEMI), which performed with Dewey Redman and Sonny Greenwich .

The album Compassion ( Naxos Jazz ), which was also created with his trio, received the Juno Award in 2001 for the best contemporary jazz album. In 2002 he performed with pianist Bobo Stenson at the Vancouver Jazz Festival and recorded an album with Uri Caine . In 2003 he recorded the album Traveling Lights ( Justin Time ) , accompanied by Paul Bley , Gary Peacock and Michel Lambert . Further productions followed and a. with Mat Maneri , Dewey Redman, Michel Donato , Ron Séguin and Véronique Dubois . In 2011 the trio album Inner Spire ( Leo ) was created in St. Petersburg with the drummer Michel Lambert and the Russian pianist Alexei Lapin .

Prizes and awards

In 2013, Carrier was voted best alto saxophonist in the Down Beat readers ' poll and in 2015 by the International Critic's Poll of the Internet platform “El Intruso” as best contemporary alto saxophonist.
