Bo Gustav Stenson ( pronunciation : [ ˌbuː ˈsteːnsɔn ], born August 4, 1944 in Västerås , Sweden), called Bobo ( pronunciation : [ ˈbʊbːʊ ]), is a Swedish jazz pianist, known for numerous ECM recordings.

From the age of seven he received classical piano training, but became interested in jazz at an early age and still played as a pupil in a group with Lars Färnlöf, Sven-Åke Johansson and Staffan Abeleen and in the quartet of saxophonist Börje Fredriksson (1937-1968 ) with bassist Palle Danielsson . After graduating from high school, he worked briefly in Paris, where he worked in the Blue Note Club a. a. played with Manfred Schoof and Gunter Hampel . He dropped out of a degree in musicology to become a professional jazz musician. He toured Germany with Danielsson and the drummer Rune Carlsson , played with the tenor saxophonist Bernt Rosengren , accompanied guest soloists such as Benny Bailey , Sonny Rollins , Gary Burton , Stan Getz and Dexter Gordon in Stockholm, where he moved in 1963 . He worked with Ivar Lindell and Sven-Åke Johansson in a trio that formed the rhythm section of Gunnar Fors' quartet between 1964 and 1966 , which had long stays at the Paris jazz club Le Chat qui pêche and Barcelona, ​​and with which recordings were made. With the group he also performed the experimental joint work Alphaville in Sweden , in which musical theater effects were used. He also worked closely with Don Cherry , who was then living in Scandinavia .

From the 1970s he played in a trio with Arild Andersen and Jon Christensen , later joined to a quartet by Jan Garbarek , and with George Russell's Nordic Orchestra . In 1970 he founded the world music- inspired group Rena Rama with Danielsson and Bengt Berger . He also played with the Turkish drummer Okay Temiz in his band Oriental Wind .

Since 1988 he has played in Charles Lloyd's European quartet. In 1996 he also performed with Tomasz Stańko's sextet / septet . He currently plays in a trio with drummer Jon Fält and bassist Anders Jormin .

In 2001 he was recognized as the “best European musician” with the Prix ​​Bobby Jaspar of the French Académie de Jazz . In 2006 he was awarded the Swedish medal "Litteris et Artibus". He received the Swedish Django d'Or as a Master of Jazz in 2007 . For his productions Reflections 1996, Goodbye 2005, Indicum 2012, he was awarded the Golden Disk ( Gyllene Skivan ) of the Swedish Orkesterjournal.
