Jean-Jacques Avenel

Jean-Jacques Avenel (born April 6, 1948 in Le Havre ; † August 12, 2014 ) was a French jazz bassist .

Life

Avenel initially worked as a librarian and played guitar as an amateur. He was initially self-taught on the double bass , but took lessons from Kent Carter . He has throughout his career, first with Don Cherry , Steve Warring, Colette Magny and with Noah Howard , the quartet of Frank Wright and the Intercommunal Free Dance Music Orchestra of François Tusques worked. He also performed with saxophonist Daunik Lazro . In 1981 he became a permanent member of Steve Lacy's group and has been with him for more than 20 years at international festivals and clubs and has been involved in the recording of numerous records. He has also worked with Tristan Honsinger and Toshinori Kondō on "This, That and the Other", with Pier Paolo Pozzi and with Jean-Louis Méchali , but has also worked with Richard Galliano , George Lewis , Pharoah Sanders , Archie Shepp , Dino Saluzzi , Roswell Rudd and Paul Bley occurred. He has also recorded with Mal Waldron and Daniele Cavallanti . Together with Sophia Domancich and Simon Goubert , he formed the DAG trio .

Avenel also learned to play the kora ; in his ensemble Waraba he also dealt with African music. He died of complications from cancer.
