Institut français
The Institut français ( French- French Institute ) refers to the state institution promoting the French language and culture, but also to the 143 institutions outside France that belong to the institution. They are subordinate to the French Foreign Ministry and thus have roughly the same structure and function as the Goethe Institute .
history
The first Institut français was founded in 1907 by Julien Luchaire in Florence with the support of the Faculté de lettres of the University of Grenoble . These early institutes were sponsored by universities; the later ones were founded by the French state.
Some institutes, such as the one in Guinea ( Conakry ), Guinea-Bissau ( Bissau ), Mozambique ( Maputo ), Namibia ( Windhoek ) and Niger ( Center Culturel Franco-Nigérien Jean Rouch in Niamey ), have a binational management.

There are 13 institutes in Germany, in Berlin , Bremen , Dresden , Düsseldorf , Erfurt , Frankfurt , Hamburg , Cologne , Leipzig , Magdeburg , Mainz , Munich and Stuttgart . The Stuttgart house opened under the name Center d'Etudes Françaises de Stuttgart as early as 1951. In 2009, an overarching Institut Français d'Allemagne was founded to head the 13 German Instituts français. There are also 13 German-French cultural centers in Aachen , Bonn , Erlangen , Essen , Freiburg im Breisgau , Hanover , Heidelberg , Karlsruhe , Kiel , Mannheim , Rostock , Saarbrücken and Tübingen . After all, in October 2010 there were around 130 Sociétés franco-allemandes, French-German companies.
Similar institutes exist in other European cities, such as Athens , Budapest, Bucharest, Cracow, Lisbon, London, Madrid, Prague, Rome, Saint Petersburg, Saragossa, Sofia, Thessaloniki, Valencia, Warsaw, Vienna and Zagreb. In addition, there is the more research-oriented Institut français d'études anatoliennes Georges Dumézil in Istanbul , which was named after the French religious scholar and sociologist Georges Dumézil , and the Institut français d'archéologie orientale in Cairo .
The institute is also represented on other continents, for example with the Institut franco-chilien - Instituto chileno-francés in Providencia , Santiago de Chile . In America, the Institut français d'Amérique Latine in Mexico City is one of them, as is the Institut français d'études Andines in Lima .
In Africa, in addition to the Institut français au Maroc in Agadir , Casablanca , Fès , Marrakech , Meknès , Oujda , Rabat and Tanger , the Institut français Léopold Sédar Senghor in Dakar , the Institut français de recherche en Afrique in Ibadan and Nairobi, and the institute français d'Afrique du Sud in Johannesburg .
In Asia, there are institutions such as the Institut français de recherche en Iran in Tehran , the Institut français du Proche-Orient in Damascus , Beirut and Amman , the Institut français de Pondichéry in Pondichéry , or the Institut français d'études sur l'Asie centrale in Tashkent , institutions that also undertake research tasks. In East Asia there is the Institut franco-japonais de Tokyo et Yokohama.
