Institut français d'Athènes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Institut français d'Athènes ( IFA , Greek Γαλλικό Ινστιτούτο στην Αθήνα ), and Institut français de Grèce à Athènes ( Greek Γαλλικό Ινστιτούτο της Ελλάδος στην Αθήνα ) is a 1907 under the name études Institut français d'supérieures based French cultural institute in Athens.

It is located at οδός Σίνα 31 (Sina Street) and is used for cultural and scientific exchange and cooperation in the areas of intellectual life, politics and administration, art and business. It also offers French language classes at all levels.

It should not be confused with the École française d'Athènes, founded in 1846 , which has a different objective. The Institut français d'études supérieures was under this name until 1945 administratively dependent on the École française d'Athènes .

The institute was significantly shaped by the former member of the École française d'Athènes Louis Roussel (1907–1925), by André Mirambel (1925–1928), by Roger Milliex (1936–1945 / 1947–1959) and above all by Octave Merlier (1938–1961), all of them important neo-Greekists. His orientation during the military dictatorship (1967-1974) earned him recognition from the Greek people.

Octave Merlier inaugurated the collection de l'Institut français d'Athènes , a series of publications designed to bring works by French authors to the Greek public and those of modern Greek authors to the French public. The series comprises over 100 volumes.

Since 2001 the institute has organized a Festival du film francophone de Grèce in Athens in spring and then in Thessaloniki .
