Octave Merlier

Octave Merlier (Greek Οκτάβιος Μερλιέ, born October 25, 1897 in Roubaix , † July 24, 1976 in Athens ) was a French neo-Greekist and long-time director of the Institut français d'Athènes .

Live and act

Merlier came to Paris with his family in 1908 . He volunteered in the First World War and was wounded. He then studied Greek language and literature at the Sorbonne in Paris and linguistics at the École pratique des hautes études with Antoine Meillet and Joseph Vendryes . In 1920 he became a lecturer at the Sorbonne. In 1923 he married the Greek Melpo Logotheti , whom he had met at the Institut Néo-Hellénique , and went to Greece with her at the beginning of 1925, after having previously taught at the Lycée in Le Havre for two years . At that time he had been transferred to the Institut français d'Athènes, which was headed by Louis Roussel . In 1938 he took over its management. When the Second World War broke out , he remained in Athens as Charles de Gaulle's secret agent , but was captured by collaborators of the Germans in 1941 and sent to France on behalf of the Vichy government. There he was placed under house arrest in Aurillac until 1944. In 1945 he received his doctorate with a dissertation suggested by Hubert Pernot on the language of the Gospel according to John . After the liberation he immediately returned to Greece and took over the management of the Institut français d'Athènes. In 1960 he refused to hand over the archives of the Μικρασιατικό Κέντρο Σπουδών to the French ambassador, which he had founded with his wife Melpo Merlier. These were housed in the building of the Institut français d'Athènes. Merlier justified his refusal by stating that they were the property of the Greek people. As a result, he was replaced in the following year, 1961, as head of the Institut français d'Athènes. He then worked until 1971 as a professor of modern Greek language and literature at the University of Aix-en-Provence . There he published the magazine Revue des études néo-helléniques (Éditions Ophrys) from 1968 . Merlier is buried on the Πρώτο Νεκροταφείο Αθηνών. The marriage remained childless.

In 1964 Merlier was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Athens . The library and the media center of the Institut français d'Athènes as well as a street that leads past the institute bear his name.

Merlier is considered the literary discoverer of the narrator Alexandros Papadiamantis . He also dealt with Greek poets such as Angelos Sikelianos , Dionysios Solomos , Kostis Palamas and Giorgos Seferis .
