Louis Roussel

Louis Roussel (* 1881 in Nîmes , † 1971 in Montpellier ) was a French Graecist and Neo-Greekist .

After studying in Montpellier and at the Sorbonne, Roussel was a member of the École française d'Athènes in 1906 and became the first director of the Institut français d'Athènes in 1907 . In this way he turned to the modern Greek culture and literature. He later taught in Aix-en-Provence and at INALCO in Paris.

In 1925 he was finally appointed professor of ancient Greek language and literature at the University of Montpellier .

Roussel published widely on modern Greek culture and literature. He turned to field research when he documented stories from the island of Mykonos in shorthand. He was also one of the first to cover the Karagiozis Theater. Authors on whom he published were among others Aristotelis Valaoritis , Andreas Kalvos and Jean Moréas . In addition, he also translated various works of ancient Greek literature such as the Persians of Aeschylus and the king Oedipus of Sophocles .

From December 1922 to July 1936 he published first from Athens, from 1925 on in Montpellier the magazine Libre , which was dedicated to the intellectual life of Greece.
