Aristotelis Valaoritis ( Greek Αριστοτέλης Βαλαωρίτης , * 1824 in Lefkada , † 1879 ibid) was in the 19th century, a Greek poet of national epics about the freedom struggle of the Greek Armatoles ( Greek Αρματωλοί Armatolí , Armed ') against the Ottoman rule and one of the most famous poets its time.

Life

He was the child of a wealthy family in Lefkada , went to school there and in Corfu , and later studied law in France and Italy. However, he never worked as a lawyer, but devoted himself solely to poetry. After completing his studies, he lived on the family-owned picturesque island of Madouri east of Lefkada.

Valaoritis wrote heroic epics about the Greek Revolution of 1821 (also Greek uprising ) and its champions. He was considered the first Greek national poet who turned to the language of the people. In addition to poetry, he was also involved in politics and fought for the rights of his homeland, the "Eptanisa" of the Ionian Islands and for the liberation of Epirus from Turkish rule.

He died of heart failure in Lefkada in 1879. His son Ioannis was a well-known Greek banker, and his great-grandson Nanos Valaoritis was a poet, writer and professor of comparative literature and creative writing in San Francisco .
