Administrative division of São Tomé and Príncipes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The São Tomé and Príncipe administrative division is the vertical administrative structure of the São Tomé and Príncipe Republic .

history

Since their discovery and occupation by the colonial power Portugal in 1471 (São Tomé) and 1472 (Príncipe), the two islands have been under Portuguese administration. Until the country gained independence after the Carnation Revolution in Portugal in 1974, the colony was divided into the two districts ( concelhos ) São Tomé and Príncipe, which were divided into a number of communities ( freguesias ).

This structure was essentially retained after independence in 1975. So São Tomé County became a province and its parishes became the island's six districts. The Príncipe district became the Príncipe province with just one district of the same name.

The seven districts of São Tomé and Príncipes

São Tomé and Príncipe consists of the two islands São Tomé ( ISO code ST-S) and Príncipe (ISO code ST-P), each of which forms its own province. The two provinces are the top of the two-tier administrative division of the country, the lower tier is formed by the seven districts. There are six districts in the province of São Tomé, while the province of Príncipe consists of one congruent district.
