Provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is divided into 25 provinces and a capital district, the neutral city (French: Ville neutre ). According to the new constitution of December 2005, the country should be divided into 25 provinces and the city of Kinshasa . The new structure was decided in 2008 and then postponed several times and finally implemented in mid-2015.

The Orientale province was first renamed Haut-Congo in 1997 , and was given its current name within the same year.

Provinces 1960 to 1988

When it was founded, the Republic of the Congo was administratively divided into six provinces. This structure changed through regional reforms and secession efforts.
