geography

The province is located in the southern center of the country and borders on Sankuru in the northeast, Kasaï-Oriental and Lomami in the east, Lualaba in the south, Angola in the southwest and Kasaï in the west .

history

The area of today's province of Kasaï-Central, also called "Lulua", has belonged to different provinces since the independence of the DR Congo. Until 1962 it was, together with today's Kasaï , Kasaï-Oriental , Lomami and Sankuru, part of a larger province called "Kasai", from 1962 to 1966 it was part of Luluabourg and from 1966 it belonged to Kasai-Occidental .

An administrative reform decided in 2005 provided for the Lulua district to be given provincial status. However, it was not implemented and was canceled in January 2011 by a constitutional amendment by President Joseph Kabila. However, the reorganization was implemented in 2015 and Kasaï-Occidental was divided into two new provinces: Kasaï and Kasaï-Central.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR) reported on April 19, 2017 that investigators from the United Nations Joint Human Rights Office (UNJHRO) and the UN Police (UNPOL) were on a fact-finding mission between April 5 and 7 found at least 17 other mass graves in the province of Kasaï-Central. Since August 2016, a total of 40 mass graves in the province of Kasaï-Central and the province of Kasaï-Oriental have been confirmed by the UNHCHR.
