history

The area of the province of Lomami belonged as "District Kabinda" after independence in 1960 to the province of Kasaï and from 1988 to the newly formed province of Kasaï-Oriental . An administrative reform passed in 2005 provided for the Kabindas area to be given provincial status under the name Lomami . This territorial reform was first postponed and canceled in January 2011 by a constitutional amendment by President Joseph Kabila . However, the reorganization was implemented in 2015 and Lomami was granted province status.
