An administrative reform adopted in 2005 provided for the Sankuru district to be given provincial status. However, it was not implemented and was canceled in January 2011 by a constitutional amendment by President Joseph Kabila. However, the reorganization was implemented in 2015 and Kasaï-Oriental was divided into three new provinces: Sankuru, Lomami and Kasaï-Oriental.
