The area of today's Sankuru Province has belonged to different provinces since the independence of the DR Congo. Until 1962 it was together with today's Kasaï, Kasaï-Oriental, Kasaï-Central and Lomami part of a larger province called "Kasai", from 1962 to 1966 it was an independent province and from 1966 it belonged to Kasaï-Oriental .
An administrative reform adopted in 2005 provided for the Sankuru district to be given provincial status. However, it was not implemented and was canceled in January 2011 by a constitutional amendment by President Joseph Kabila. However, the reorganization was implemented in 2015 and Kasaï-Oriental was divided into three new provinces: Sankuru, Lomami and Kasaï-Oriental.
