history
The area of today's province of Kasaï has belonged to different provinces since the independence of the DR Congo. Until 1962 it was, together with today's Kasaï-Central , Kasaï-Oriental , Lomami and Sankuru part of a larger province that was also called "Kasai". From 1962 to 1966 it was part of the "Unité Kasaïenne" and from 1966 belonged it to Kasai-Occidental .
An administrative reform decided in 2005 provided for the district of Kasaï to be given provincial status. However, it was not implemented and was canceled in January 2011 by a constitutional amendment by President Joseph Kabila. However, the reorganization was implemented in 2015 and Kasaï-Occidental was divided into two new provinces: Kasaï and Kasaï-Central.
