Kamina is the capital of the Haut-Lomami Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo . In 2004 the number of inhabitants was determined to be 115,626.

Kamina is the crossing point of three railway lines of the Société Nationale des Chemins de fer du Congo . The city is located on the national road 1 between Mwene-Ditu and Likasi , which leads from the mouth of the Congo across the south of the country to the border with Zambia . The city has a civil airport and a military airfield about 30 km northeast of the city.

The city was also known as the location of a former military base of the Belgian armed forces , on which the German mercenary Siegfried Müller worked during the Congo crisis .

After the Second World War , the complex consisted of an air force base that was used for training pilots and a second complex for training airborne troops . When the Congo gained independence in June 1960, the Belgians initially retained control of the military base in consultation with the new government, but in October 1960 the base was handed over to the United Nations .
