Buta is the capital of the Bas-Uele Province in the north of the Democratic Republic of the Congo .

It lies on a branch line of the Bumba - Mungbere railway line between Aketi and Isiro . It can also be reached by road and air (airfield). It has 48,000 or 125,428 inhabitants, depending on the source. In 2005 the city was ravaged by the plague .

The city has also been the seat of the Catholic diocese of Buta since 1959 .
