Mbandaka (until 1966 Coquilhatville ) is a city in the north of the equatorial African state Democratic Republic of the Congo (until 1997 Zaire ).
geography
Mbandaka is one of the largest cities in the republic and is the capital of the province of Equateur . Its latitude is 0.1 ° north (just a few kilometers north of the equator ) and its longitude is 18.3 ° east. It is located on the eastern (left) bank of the Congo River at an altitude of 370 m near the mouth of the Ruki . Its population was around 185,000 in 2005 and has increased by a third since 1984, which is well below the general population growth of the country until 2005. For 2015 the population is given as 1,187,837.
history
Mbandaka was founded in 1883 by Henry Morton Stanley under the name Equateurville . Under Belgian rule, the name was changed to Coquilhatville . In 1966 the city was renamed “Mbandaka” as part of the “Africanization” initiated by the then dictator Mobutu Sese Seko .
At the end of the First Congo War , the city was taken on May 13, 1997 by rebels fighting against Mobutu.

Mbandaka is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Mbandaka-Bikoro .
economy
The city lives mainly from fishing . The caught fish are sold in the larger surrounding cities as well as in the capital Kinshasa .
The botanical garden in the nearby, northeastern Eala is particularly worth seeing .
