Kindu is the capital of Maniema Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo .
The city, located at an altitude of 500 meters above sea level on the Congo River , has around 200,000 inhabitants. The city is located 400 km west of Bukavu , has a railway connection to the cities of Kalemie , Kamina and Kananga, as well as an airfield with a 2,200-meter runway.
In the 19th century the city was an important center of the gold , ivory and slave trade . Arabic - Swahili- born slave traders had their base here from 1860 and sent caravans to Zanzibar from here .
Kindu is the seat of the Diocese of Kindu . In the city is among other things the state Université de Kindu founded in 1993.
