The Kindu airport ( ICAO code : FZOA , IATA code : KND ) is a national airport near the town of Kindu in the province of Maniema the Democratic Republic of Congo . The airport is operated by the Congolese government. From June 2003 to June 2004 soldiers of the Swedish Air Force were stationed at the airport to support the reconstruction of the country after the end of the Second Congo War (1998-2003).
Incidents
- On October 10, 1988, a Boeing 727-30 of the Lignes Aeriennes Congolaises ( aircraft registration 9Q-CSG) was shot down by rebels with a Russian SA-7 missile three minutes after taking off from Kindu airport . The captain tried to make an emergency landing , but control was lost and the plane crashed into dense jungle. All 41 inmates were killed.
