The Goma airport ( ICAO code : FZNA , IATA code : GOM ) is an international airport near the city of Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo . The airport was destroyed by the lava of the volcano in 2002 during the eruption of Nyiragongo, 14 kilometers away , and then rebuilt with international help. Since then, the track has been shortened from 3000 to 2000 meters, which has already led to several accidents. In January 2012, the airport was damaged again in another outbreak.
Incidents
Several planes have crashed at Goma Airport in recent years.
- On May 27, 2003, an Antonov An-12 from Showa Air from Sierra Leone ( aircraft registration 9L-LCR ) slid into a field of cooled lava after overshooting the runway in Goma , but none of the four occupants was harmed.
- On September 7, 2007, an Antonov An-12BP of the Georgian Transaviaservice (4L-SAS) rolled over the end of the runway at Goma Airport, which was no longer available in full due to a volcanic eruption in 2002. The machine slid into a field of cooled lava, broke apart and caught fire, killing all eight people on board. Before and after the accident, there had been other accidents of a similar nature at the airport (see also the flight accident of an Antonov An-12 in Goma 2007 ) .
- On 15 April 2008 a plane crashed type Douglas DC-9-51 of Hewa Bora Airways (9Q-CHN) at startup. The machine shot over the end of the runway into a residential area of the city. 37 residents died and 3 passengers were also killed.
- On November 19, 2009, another aircraft came off the runway when landing. The McDonnell Douglas DC-9-82 (MD-82) of the Congolese Compagnie Africaine d'Aviation with the registration number 9Q-CAB was irreparably damaged and about 20 of the 117 passengers injured. The machine was used on the Kinshasa – Goma route.
- In March 2013 a Fokker 50 belonging to the Compagnie Africaine d'Aviation (9Q-CBD) had an accident . The 7 crew members were killed in the accident; the three passengers on the cargo flight survived.
- An Antonov An-24 operated by the Congolese Serve Air (9S-AFL) was badly damaged on September 10, 2017 after it rolled over the runway into a field of cooled lava. The four people on board were not harmed.
- On November 24, 2019, a Dornier 228-200 of the airline Busy Bee Congo (9S-GNH) had an accident shortly after taking off from Goma Airport. The plane crashed on buildings in the Birere district south of the airport and went up in flames. At least 18 people were killed.
