Lists of aviation accidents

The aircraft accident of an Antonov An-12 in Goma occurred on September 7, 2007, when an Antonov An-12BP cargo plane crashed during a stopover at Goma Airport . All 8 people on board the Antonov were killed in the incident.

Airplane and occupants

The aircraft used on the flight was a 44-year-old Soviet -made Antonov An-12BP that made its maiden flight in 1963. The machine had the work number 3341108. The four-engine transport aircraft was equipped with four Iwchenko AI-20M turboprop engines .

The machine belonged to the Georgian aviation company Transaviaservice. The flight was carried out for the Congolese Galaxy Incorporation . The machine was operated without a valid certificate of airworthiness - and thus illegally. The certificate expired in March of the same year and was not renewed.

The crew reportedly consisted of two Georgians , two Ukrainians and one Congolese, with three passengers on board.

the accident

The machine transported around 18 tons of cargo, including palm oil, from Kisangani to Bukavu , with a stopover in Goma . The flight to Goma was initially without incident. On the approach to Goma, the machine approached the runway from the south. It crash-landed and at the northern end of the runway slid into a field of cooled lava beyond . The Antonov caught fire, all 8 people on board were killed.

root cause

Photo of the runway, which is partly covered with lava

The fact that the Antonov slipped into a field of cooled lava is due to the location of Goma Airport, only 14 kilometers from the active Nyiragongo volcano . The lava field at the airport was created in 2002 when the volcano erupted. At that time, lava poured onto the northern part of the runway, rendering that part unusable. Since then, the runway has been shortened to 2000 meters. Since then there have been several accidents there:

  • As early as 2003, another Antonov An-12 had slid into the lava field in Goma, but none of the four inmates was harmed.
  • A McDonnell Douglas DC-9-82 (MD-82) of the CAA - Compagnie Africaine d'Aviation with 117 people on board shot over the runway in 2009 and was so badly damaged in the collision with the cooled lava that it was written off had to become. However, humans were not harmed.
  • An Antonov An-24 was badly damaged in 2017 after it rolled over the runway end into the lava field. The four people on board were not harmed.
